Cane Reeds- The Problems
Any musician who plays a woodwind musical instrument involving the use of a double reed will quickly realise that keeping the reed in optimum playing condition is a serious problem.
Tradtional double reeds are unstable due mainly to the organic material used in their construction, namely Spanish or Indian Cane. Almost any organic material which is required to operate in a precise fashion under extremely hostile conditions such as changing levels of humidity and temperature will be inclined to perform in an erratic way. It's operating life is also short.
